Our History

Shippers’ Choice of Virginia, Inc. was formed as a Professional Tractor-trailer Driver Training School in January of 1993. We have been training students for over 20 years! No school in Virginia has been doing it longer or better. In the beginning, we were located in Woodford, Virginia until late 1998 at which time we began to provide our training services exclusively through the community college system in Virginia. We offered our training program at John Tyler Community College, Thomas Nelson Community College and Northern Virginia Community College to name a few, as well as several others for many years. At one time, we were training at 8 different college campuses throughout Virginia. The current programs that may be at these colleges may not even exist if it were not for Shippers’ Choice. We have also be the catalyst for at least one other school in Virginia and one in Maryland. The founders of each of these programs learned their trade from us. It would be fair to say that we are the “Father” of all of these programs. We are proud to know that we not only help our own students, but we have trained the leaders of other schools to help theirs.

2004-2011- Over time, Shippers Choice ended its relationships with the community colleges. We did this for a variety of reasons: Including ever-increasing cost of doing business with the colleges, lack of logistical support, ideological differences and cramped work spaces.

2005- We added Class B Driver training to our Manassas Location.

2006- Shippers Choice was asked by USA Truck and CRST to provide refresher training to their employees who held a CDL but had not driven recently or had been out of driving for a short time.

2007- We moved our Richmond school to the current location.

2009- We were asked by the Department of Motor Vehicles in Washington, DC to become the only 3rd party tester. For a limited time, we helped the DMV in DC catch up on a long back log of people who wanted to take a CDL licensing exam but were unable to because the DMV was short on Examiners. They recognized that we were the only people with the expertise and the ability to help.

2009- We moved our Manassas school to its current location

2011- We moved from Thomas Nelson Community College to our current Newport News Location.

2012- 2013 – We added 20 new training vehicles to our fleet.

2013- We added Class B training to our Richmond location.

Today- We are stronger than ever and we are working every day to help our students and improve their lives. To date, Shippers’ Choice has trained well over 25,000 successful graduates and counting! You could be next on the road to a successful career! Call us now!
